Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a significant increase in the deployment of California National Guard personnel to assist with firefighting efforts in Los Angeles. The number of service members activated has been doubled to 1,680, joining thousands already on the ground battling fires fueled by hurricane-force winds.
"We are continuing to rush in resources to rapidly respond to the firestorm in Los Angeles fueled by hurricane-force winds," stated Governor Newsom. "The men and women of the California National Guard are working day and night to help Los Angeles residents during their greatest time of need. We are grateful for their continued bravery and commitment to be of service to others."
More than 1,000 service members from the Military Police Forces are stationed at traffic control points, enhancing local law enforcement capabilities. The remaining personnel support wildfire suppression operations through various CalGuard initiatives, including Task Force Rattlesnake and additional training programs.
California's response involves over 12,000 personnel, comprising firefighters, guard members, highway patrol officers, and transportation teams. The effort includes more than 1,660 pieces of firefighting equipment such as engines, aircraft, dozers, and water tenders.
Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency earlier this week and issued an executive order for affected communities. President Biden approved a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration to aid ongoing response efforts. Federal assistance continues for the Hurst, Eaton, and Palisades Fires.
Californians impacted by the wildfires can find information and resources at CA.gov/LAfires. Those who have suffered losses can apply for disaster assistance online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362. Assistance is available in over 40 languages.
