Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed a significant increase in funding to aid Los Angeles in its recovery from the recent hurricane-force firestorm. During an ongoing special session of the California Legislature, Newsom, along with Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire and Speaker of the Assembly Robert Rivas, is working to expedite the allocation of funds for emergency response and initial recovery efforts.

The Governor's proposal includes at least $2.5 billion in additional funding aimed at supporting recovery and cleanup operations, enhancing wildfire preparedness, and reopening schools affected by the fires. Newsom emphasized the state's commitment to rebuilding Los Angeles swiftly: "California is organizing a Marshall Plan to help Los Angeles rebuild faster and stronger."

Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire stated, "California is moving heaven and earth to ensure an expedited and successful recovery and rebuild for all Angelenos." He highlighted that early funding would facilitate neighborhood clean-up and begin rebuilding lives while investing in legal protections for vulnerable Californians.

Speaker Robert Rivas shared his observations from affected areas like Altadena, Malibu, and the Palisades: "People have lost homes, livelihoods, and a sense of security. They are scared and angry." He stressed the urgency of expediting resources for clean-up and recovery.

The expanded scope of the special legislative session allows for swift consideration of new funding requests. The Governor's specific proposals include boosting emergency response funding by $1 billion, providing technical assistance for school rebuilding efforts, and accelerating $1.5 billion in preparedness funding against natural disasters.

Over 15,000 personnel have been mobilized across California to support firefighting efforts. This includes more than 1,900 pieces of equipment such as engines, aircraft, dozers, and water tenders. In addition to state efforts, federal assistance has been secured following President Biden's approval of a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration.

Californians impacted by wildfires can access resources through CA.gov/LAfires or apply for disaster assistance online or via phone. Assistance is available in over 40 languages.
