Governor Gavin Newsom has enacted a $2.5 billion relief package to aid Los Angeles in recovering from the recent firestorm. The funds are aimed at supporting emergency response efforts and accelerating recovery and rebuilding processes.

The legislation, known as ABx1-4 and SBx1-3, was crafted by Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel and Senator Scott Wiener. It seeks to streamline rebuilding efforts and restore damaged school facilities.

Governor Newsom stated, “Thanks to our partners in the legislature, we’re providing over $2.5 billion in immediate relief – expediting initial firestorm response and recovery efforts. We’re also directing millions of dollars to help local governments speed up building approvals – so folks can rebuild their homes faster."

Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas emphasized bipartisan cooperation, saying, “California leaders from both political parties are united and working together to provide L.A. with the immediate assistance and support they need.”

Senate President Pro Tempore Mike McGuire remarked on the commitment to long-term support: “This $2.5 billion is a clear commitment that we’ve got your back LA... Your rebuild and your comeback is our priority."

The package includes $2.5 billion for emergency measures such as evacuations, debris removal, and hazard assessments. Additionally, $4 million is allocated for expedited rebuilding efforts through enhanced planning review resources. A further $1 million is dedicated to restoring school facilities.

Governor Newsom has issued several executive orders aimed at facilitating recovery, including tax relief for those affected by the fires, streamlined rebuilding processes, expanded temporary housing options, and protections against price gouging.

Californians impacted by the wildfires can seek assistance through various channels including DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling FEMA.
