California Attorney General Rob Bonta has expressed strong opposition to President Trump's executive order aimed at ending access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth. In a statement released today, Bonta described the order as "cruel and irresponsible," asserting that it would further marginalize vulnerable youth and jeopardize their health.
Bonta emphasized the importance of equal protection under the law for all Americans, regardless of gender identity. He stated, "All Americans have the inalienable right to equal protection under the law, regardless of their gender identity. This includes the right to access healthcare free from discrimination."
He reassured California residents that state laws such as the Transgender, Gender Diverse, and Intersex (TGI) Inclusive Care Act protect families seeking gender-affirming care and healthcare providers. "In California, we seek to promote access to healthcare, not restrict it," Bonta affirmed.
The Attorney General's office is reviewing the executive order and its implementation closely. Bonta assured that "the California Department of Justice will continue to stand up for our people and our values."
California offers various resources for transgender youth and the broader LGBTQ+ community through several state departments, including health equity information, civil rights guidance, and insurance coverage details for transgender individuals.
Individuals who believe their rights are being violated due to the enforcement of this executive order are encouraged to file complaints with either the California Attorney General’s Office or the California Civil Rights Department.
