The University of California, Davis (UC Davis) has been identified as a major economic force in the Sacramento metro area and the state of California. According to a recent analysis by Economic & Planning Systems Inc., UC Davis contributes approximately $9.57 billion annually to the regional economy and $13.18 billion statewide, supporting 61,700 jobs in the region and 68,300 jobs across the state.

Aggie Square, an innovation district on UC Davis's Sacramento campus set to open its first phase in May, is projected to further boost these figures. Once fully operational, Aggie Square is expected to contribute around $500 million in regional economic output each year and support 3,200 jobs annually. The construction of Aggie Square alone is anticipated to generate over 12,100 construction-related jobs regionally with an economic impact of $1.9 billion; this expands to $2.32 billion and 13,200 jobs statewide.

Chancellor Gary S. May commented on the university's role: “We know that UC Davis continues to be a powerful engine of economic growth in our region and state, improving opportunities for future generations.”

The report highlights how direct spending by UC Davis results in significant secondary benefits for local economies through ripple effects that bolster businesses meeting the university's operational needs. Every dollar spent by UC Davis locally generates an additional $1.15 within the region.

The first phase of Aggie Square will culminate with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 2. The project includes research labs, classrooms, housing, and public spaces intended to foster collaboration among researchers, students, industry partners, entrepreneurs, and community members.

George Baxter, UC Davis chief innovation and economic development officer said: “Aggie Square will help transform innovation with the partnerships it creates among industry, scholars, students, entrepreneurs and the community.”

UC Davis Health emerges as a significant contributor within this framework. In 2023 alone, its direct expenditures amounted to $1.84 billion regionally ($3.21 billion statewide), resulting in a total regional economic impact of $4.01 billion ($6.26 billion statewide). This expenditure supports thousands of additional jobs beyond those directly employed by UC Davis Health.

Furthermore, fiscal benefits for both city and county have been observed due to tax revenues generated from activities related to students and staff versus municipal service costs needed for these populations.

- Construction projects associated with both campuses (excluding Aggie Square) continue contributing significantly towards job creation across multiple sectors.
