The construction of Aggie Square, an innovation district on the UC Davis Sacramento campus, is nearing completion with its grand opening scheduled for May. This ambitious project involves the creation of 750,000 square feet of lab, office, and collaboration space, along with a six-story parking garage and nearly 200 apartments. Over 80 local businesses have been engaged in this endeavor, reflecting a strong focus on community involvement.

The development aligns with the Aggie Square Community Benefits Partnership Agreement established in 2021 between UC Davis, Wexford Science and Technology, and the City of Sacramento. The agreement outlines commitments such as $50 million for affordable housing initiatives, local hiring for construction jobs, job training programs, youth opportunities funding, and community access to facilities.

A report published in February anticipates that once fully operational, Aggie Square will generate approximately $500 million in regional economic output annually and support around 3,200 jobs.

H.C. Muddox and Bagatelos Architectural Glass Systems (BAGS) are two significant local contributors to the project. H.C. Muddox provided custom-designed bricks for the facade of one building. The design includes a pattern spelling out "Fiat Lux," the University of California motto meaning "Let There Be Light." Jodi Holmes from H.C. Muddox noted the historical significance of their involvement: “It’s neat to see something so old be a part of something so new.”

BAGS was responsible for the glass structures at Aggie Square. CEO Chris Bagatelos highlighted the importance of working on such a major local project: “For these guys, to be doing the work in Sacramento is really kind of special,” he said.

Chris Bagatelos expressed pride in contributing to a prominent local development: “It’s the best,” he said. “Sacramento proud.”
