The Goleta Police Department is taking action during Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April to address the dangers of distracted driving. The department is urging drivers to maintain focus by keeping their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, emphasizing that distractions such as checking a phone, eating, or adjusting the radio can lead to severe consequences.

According to a 2024 California Statewide Public Opinion Survey, 74% of drivers identified texting while driving as their primary safety concern. In 2022, distracted driving resulted in 148 fatalities in traffic crashes across California. However, these figures might be underestimated since it's not always possible for law enforcement to determine distraction as a factor in accidents.

Throughout April, Goleta Police will be vigilant in enforcing the state's hands-free cell phone law. Current regulations prohibit drivers from holding phones or electronic devices while operating a vehicle, even when stopped at red lights. This includes activities such as talking, texting, or using apps. Violators face fines and repeat offenders may receive additional points on their driving records.

To promote focused driving and road safety, drivers are encouraged to:

- Store phones out of reach and silence notifications while driving.

- Prepare by setting GPS directions and adjusting mirrors before starting the trip.

- Keep both hands on the wheel and refrain from eating or grooming.

- Demonstrate focused driving habits to passengers and young drivers.

- Speak up if witnessing distracted behavior as a passenger.

- Pull over safely if immediate attention is required for urgent matters.

This initiative is supported by funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department manages police services for Goleta City.
