California has formally urged the federal government to incorporate commercial structures and multi-family units into the ongoing fire debris removal operations in Los Angeles. Governor Gavin Newsom, through a communication sent by Nancy Ward, Director of the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), requested the US Army Corps of Engineers to extend debris removal services to include small businesses and residential apartments, condominiums, and mobile homes.

"Our state stands with Los Angeles residents and businesses. We are dedicated to restoring all parts of our communities swiftly and safely after these fires and are grateful to our federal partners for their continued support," stated Governor Gavin Newsom.

Under Governor Newsom’s leadership, the cleanup process in California has been accelerated by reducing bureaucratic hurdles and facilitating the entry of skilled crews into affected areas sooner. Generally, debris removal from private commercial properties falls under the responsibility of property owners and does not usually qualify for federal programs.

Approval of this request would widen the cleanup efforts to encompass various facility types currently excluded from federal debris removal assistance, such as non-profits, houses of worship, businesses, and multi-family housing structures.

With the March 31 deadline swiftly approaching, it becomes crucial for survivors to apply for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Eligible property owners must complete a Right-of-Entry (ROE) form for complimentary debris removal.

After submission, participants can track their application through county recovery and US Army Corps of Engineers pages. County officials may contact participants if further documentation is necessary. Once approved, the cleanup process will initiate.

A Debris Call Center has been established by the US Army Corps of Engineers to address inquiries regarding Private Property Debris Removal. It operates from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM and can be reached at 213-308-8305.
