California Attorney General Rob Bonta has announced a preliminary legal victory in the ongoing case of National Treasury Employees Union v. Vought, which challenges the Trump Administration's attempts to dismantle the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). The court's decision temporarily halts actions by the Trump Administration that aimed to weaken the agency, allowing the litigation to continue without further irreversible changes to the CFPB.

This decision supports the arguments presented in an amicus brief led by Attorney General Bonta and a coalition of other attorneys general last month. The brief stressed that closing down the CFPB would leave a significant gap in consumer protections, shifting the burden solely onto state agencies to regulate practices currently overseen by the federal bureau.

Attorney General Bonta stated, "The CFPB is the top cop protecting American families who want to buy a home and people who want to borrow money to buy a car or attend college. The CFPB is for everyone. This agency fights for hardworking people who don’t want to get cheated by big banks and predatory lenders and protects a level playing field where businesses can succeed on merit rather than by cutting corners and cheating their customers."

Bonta further emphasized the importance of the court's intervention, saying, "The court order today prevents the Trump Administration from continuing its illegal attempt to destroy the agency looking out for consumers across the country. I celebrate this early win and will continue to use the power of my office to advocate for essential consumer protections nationwide."
