The Goleta Police Department has announced a DUI checkpoint to be held in connection with the unsanctioned Deltopia event in Isla Vista. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. The checkpoint will be set up at an undisclosed location within the City of Goleta.

Checkpoint locations are selected based on areas with a history of DUI-related crashes and arrests. The primary goal of these checkpoints is to enhance public safety by discouraging impaired driving. During the operation, deputies will check for signs of alcohol and drug impairment among drivers.

Sergeant Noel Rivas of the Goleta Police Department stated, “We are hopeful that these checkpoints will continue to educate the public of the dangers of drinking and driving.” He advised, “Plan ahead for alternative means of transportation if you plan on drinking.”

Additionally, the Goleta Police Department will deploy extra deputies and officers to enforce traffic regulations and extend parking restrictions during this period.

The department also highlighted that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol consumption. Prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can also impair driving ability. Users are advised to follow usage directions and heed warnings about driving and operating heavy machinery. The public is reminded that driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal, despite its legal status for medicinal and recreational use.

First-time DUI offenders face considerable consequences, including average fines and penalties totaling $13,500 and a suspended driving license.

The initiative is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The City of Goleta receives law enforcement services through a contract with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office.
