President Joe Biden’s choice for the next Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) is being opposed by 11 Republican senators and 64 Republican House members.

Xavier Becerra has been nominated by Biden to head the Health and Human Services department but his policies and alleged lack of experience in healthcare are motivating Republicans to ask the current president to choose another.

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) led the coalition and he and members of Congress sent Biden a letter on Monday relaying their concerns over Becerra as the HHS head. According to the letter, Republicans say that Becerra is not qualified to head the HHS and they are worried that what they call his extremist views and contempt for those who oppose his views could sink the department.

The senators wrote, “Mr. Becerra’s lack of healthcare experience, enthusiasm for replacing private health insurance with government-run Medicare-for-all, and embrace of radical policies on immigration, abortion, and religious liberty, render him unfit for any position of public trust, and especially for HHS Secretary,”
