Cal Performances is set to present SLAM!, a unique blend of circus arts and professional wrestling, on October 5 and 6. The event features the Québécois troupe FLIP Fabrique, known for their acrobatic prowess, collaborating with director Robert Lepage. The performance promises an unconventional theatrical experience with characters such as Greek warriors and contortionist Barbies.
Olivier Normand, the troupe's acrobatic choreographer, explained the challenges faced in merging circus techniques with wrestling moves: “In circus, you usually try to land on your feet,” he said. “But in wrestling, you don’t often land on your feet. You mostly land on your back, even on your head, or upside down."
SLAM! incorporates a mock competition format where wrestlers perform daring physical feats. Audience participation plays a crucial role as attendees are encouraged to engage actively by cheering and booing throughout the performance. Normand emphasized this aspect by stating: “It’s very rare in a theater space that you have permission to stand up and shout at the referee or the wrestlers.”
The show also includes music and sound design that simulate a large arena atmosphere. UC Berkeley students can access $10 tickets for select seats through Cal Performances’ Golden Bear Circle program. After the Saturday show, student ticket holders are invited to a post-performance reception.
