The Goleta Police Department has announced a DUI checkpoint scheduled for Friday, December 13th. The checkpoint will be conducted from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the City of Goleta. These locations are selected based on historical data of DUI-related crashes and arrests.
The main objective of these checkpoints is to enhance public safety by discouraging impaired driving rather than making arrests. During the operation, officers will monitor drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment.
The department emphasized that impaired driving can result from substances other than alcohol. Some prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect one's ability to drive safely. It is crucial to adhere to usage directions and heed any warnings related to driving or operating heavy machinery, which includes vehicles. Although marijuana use is legal both medicinally and recreationally, driving under its influence remains illegal. Individuals planning to consume alcohol or medications that might impair their driving should arrange to stay home.
Those convicted of a first-time DUI offense face average costs amounting to $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with having their driver's license suspended.
This program receives funding from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Law enforcement services in the City of Goleta are managed through a contract with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office.
