Santa Barbara man arrested for theft of Christmas trees

A Santa Barbara man has been taken into custody for allegedly stealing Christmas trees from a local nursery. On December 9, 2024, deputies received reports of a suspect removing multiple Christmas trees and wreaths from a nursery located in the 100-block of S. Patterson Avenue.

Following an investigation, authorities identified the suspect as Matthew Johnson, aged 43, from Santa Barbara. Deputies arrested Johnson on December 11, 2024, at around 9:30 a.m. at his home in the 4500-block of Oak Glen Drive. During the arrest, deputies recovered one stolen tree and two wreaths.

Johnson was booked into the Main Jail on charges of felony burglary and is being held on $20,000 bail. The stolen items were returned to the nursery.
