California Attorney General Rob Bonta, along with a coalition of states, has announced the filing of an amicus brief supporting Illinois in the case Schoenthal v. Raoul. The case, currently before the Seventh Circuit, challenges Illinois's ban on carrying firearms on public transportation.
Attorney General Bonta emphasized the importance of safety for individuals using public transit. "While people travel to work, to their homes, or with their children, they should not have fear gun violence," he stated. He further noted that "loaded guns do not belong on buses, trains, or subways" and highlighted the responsibility of states to protect their communities.
The multistate brief underscores the significance of reasonable gun regulations aligned with Second Amendment rights to ensure public safety. It stresses restricting firearms in sensitive places such as public transportation and discusses how these measures align with Supreme Court precedents on the Second Amendment.
Bonta is joined by Attorneys General from several states and the District of Columbia in this legal action.
A copy of the brief is available for public viewing.
