Students at UC Davis, particularly those who are Hispanic and from low-income backgrounds in STEM fields, are set to benefit from the university's dual status as an R1 research institution and its eligibility as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). This was highlighted by Luis Carvajal-Carmona during his appearance on "Face to Face With Chancellor May."
Carvajal-Carmona, who serves as associate vice chancellor for academic diversity in the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and is a professor at the School of Medicine, stated: “It will open a lot of funding opportunities, and we believe that is going to be helping Hispanic students.” He added that there is anticipation about collaborating with faculty to develop programs aimed at closing equity gaps.
The campus has been pursuing HSI designation to reinforce its commitment to Latinx students. Achieving this status allows UC Davis to apply for competitive grants from federal sources and foundations, which support student success and institutional transformation.
Carvajal-Carmona expressed optimism about UC Davis continuing its role as a diverse university. He envisions serving diverse communities as integral to the university's mission rather than being seen as a special designation.
Chancellor Gary S. May remarked: “It doesn't have to be highlighted in any way because it's expected, that's how we serve our community, that's how we educate the population in California. I'm so proud of us for having reached that eligibility.”
Additionally, Carvajal-Carmona founded the Center for Advancing Cancer Health Equity. The center focuses on addressing disparities in cancer prevention, treatment, and outcomes through community engagement.
