California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, along with attorneys general from 11 other states, have issued a joint statement in response to recent executive orders by President Trump. These orders aim to dismantle diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) policies.
The statement asserts that "President Trump’s executive orders are unnecessary and disingenuous." It argues that these measures do not address discrimination effectively. The attorneys general claim the administration is targeting lawful programs beneficial to all Americans and consistent with anti-discrimination laws.
The group criticizes President Trump's linkage of DEIA initiatives to a recent plane crash as "baseless and offensive," describing it as an insult to those affected by the tragedy. They emphasize their role in representing millions of American workers and express strong opposition to what they see as an attempt to misuse longstanding policies designed to combat historical inequities.
According to the statement, DEIA initiatives promote respect and understanding while ensuring diverse perspectives are valued in workplaces and educational settings. The initiatives are said not only to prevent discrimination but also foster inclusive practices like expanded parental leave.
Contrary to President Trump's claims, the attorneys general argue that DEIA policies do not undermine individual merit or lead employers to lower standards. Instead, they assert these initiatives ensure fair opportunities for everyone.
As chief law enforcement officers of their states, the attorneys general reaffirm their commitment to enforcing civil rights laws against discriminatory practices. They condemn any form of discrimination and oppose the President's recent actions along with his narrative justifying them.
