Governor Gavin Newsom's recent proclamation of a state of emergency aims to expedite wildfire prevention projects in California. The decision comes after the Los Angeles firestorms and amid increasing wildfire risks across the state. This move is designed to streamline forest management processes by cutting through bureaucratic delays, particularly those associated with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

Doug Teeter, Butte County Supervisor, expressed support for this initiative: “Devastating wildfires unfortunately have greatly affected our State’s citizens and environment. I applaud the Governor’s commitment to reduce the bureaucratic bottleneck CEQA has become.”

Graham Knaus, CEO of the California State Association of Counties, also praised the governor's actions: “This is absolutely the right move from Governor Newsom. Counties are ready to move quickly to address wildfire risks."

Brian K. Rice, President of California Professional Firefighters, emphasized the importance of these measures: “Governor Newsom’s actions demonstrate a meaningful commitment to safeguarding our communities from the escalating threat of wildfires."

Patrick Blacklock from Rural County Representatives of California highlighted scientific backing for accelerated forest treatments: “Federal and State policy backed by the preponderance of science is clear that we need to accelerate the pace and scale of forest treatments if we are to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire."

Assemblymember David Tangipa (R-Fresno) stressed urgency in creating buffer zones between urban areas and wildlands.

Michael Wara from Stanford University noted that Governor Newsom is addressing a critical issue for California.

Pete Jackson from Green Diamond Resource Company supported removing barriers for fuels treatment projects.

Matt Dias from CalForests stated that this proclamation supports crucial prevention activities.

Paul Mason from Pacific Forest Trust pointed out that increasing prescribed fire use is necessary for preventing destructive wildfires.

Randi Spivak from Center for Biological Diversity described the order as strategic.

J. Lopez from California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection highlighted its importance in expediting resource management practices.

Seth Schalet from Santa Clara County FireSafe Council explained how this order allows fast-tracking fuel reduction projects like those in Santa Clara County.

Christopher Anthony, former Chief Deputy Director of CAL FIRE & Wildfire Advisor, applauded efforts to streamline regulatory barriers for community risk reduction.

The California Biomass Energy Alliance expressed readiness to work on converting wood waste into renewable energy as part of these efforts.

Joe Smailes and Lawrence Camp representing Forest Landowners of California endorsed Governor Newsom’s proposals set forth in his Executive Order issued on March 1, 2025. They emphasized reducing administrative burdens and costs associated with vegetation management.
